Il 19 gennaio 1943 nasceva Janis Lyn Joplin (19 gennaio 1943 Port Arthur/- 4 ottobre 1970 Los Angeles), soprannominata "Pearl".Dopo aver pubblicato tre album, morì di eroina all'età di 27 anni. Un quarto album, Pearl, fu rilasciato nel gennaio 1971, poco più di tre mesi dopo la sua morte. Raggiunse il numero uno nelle classifiche di Billboard .Al Montreux Jazz Festival del 1976, Nina Simone, che Joplin ammirava molto, lasciò questo commento su Joplin, dopo aver visto il documentario Janis (1975) che era stato proiettato al festival:"I made thirty-five albums, they bootlegged seventy. Oh, everybody took a chunk of me. And yesterday I went to see Janis Joplin's film here. And what distressed me the most, and I started to write a song about it, but I decided you weren't worthy. Because I figured that most of you are here for the festival. Anyway the point is it pained me to see how hard she worked. Because she got hooked into a thing, and it wasn't on drugs. She got hooked into a feeling and she played to corpses."Nel 1967, Joplin aumentò la sua fama a seguito di un'apparizione al Monterey Pop Festival; allora era la cantante poco conosciuta della band Big Brother and the Holding Company . Dopo aver pubblicato due album con la band, continuò come solista con i suoi gruppi di supporto, prima la Kozmic Blues Band e poi la Full Tilt Boogie Band. Apparì al festival di Woodstock e al tour in treno del Festival Express. Cinque singoli di Joplin hanno raggiunto la Billboard Hot 100, inclusa una cover del Kris Kristofferson " Me and Bobby McGee ", che raggiunse il numero 1 nel marzo 1971. Le sue canzoni più popolari includono le cover di Piece of My Heart, Cry Baby, Down on Me, Ball and Chain, Summertime e la sua canzone originale Mercedes Benz, sua registrazione finale."I'm a victim of my own insides.
